FASTING – It’s Expanding Lifespan

For several years, the FoodTrients team attended the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M) Annual World Congress in Las Vegas. And every year we found ourselves even more excited about the scientific and medical evidence presented there around food, fasting, and nutrients, and how we can live longer, healthier lives. On the opening day of that conference, an entire track of lectures on fasting followed the keynote address from Dr. Valter Longo, director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California (USC) and author of The Longevity Diet, based on his ground-breaking research on a “fasting mimicking” diet. Dr. […]

Dr. Gundry Explores the Energy Paradox

You are overfed, but underpowered. Think about it. We have access to more fuel than ever before, and yet we feel out of gas. How is that possible? As you will discover, the food we eat every day may look and taste “normal,” but in actuality, it has a fraction of the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients than that same food our great-grandparents ate. In addition, the sheer volume and concentration of “energy promoting” foods we consume almost continuously throughout the day actually taxes our cellular energy system, which struggles to keep up with the constant onslaught of calories. Modern […]

9 Secrets to Living a Long Life

By Lisa Truesday A trip to the library changed Luann Alemao’s life—and the small city of Cedar Falls, Iowa—forever. While browsing the new-book shelf a few years ago, Alemao found The Blue Zones (National Geographic, 2012) by Dan Buettner, a New York Times best seller showcasing five locations in the world with the highest percentage of people living well into their 100s. Alemao, a former Family and Consumer Sciences educator, remembers feeling more than a little amazed. “I thought, wow, this is everything I used to teach, like food and nutrition, marriage and family and consumer education, plus all the […]

Apples Could Cut Cancer Risk

Eating apples every day could slash the risk of up to five different types of cancer, according to new research published in the journal Public Health Nutrition. Scientists found those eating at least one a day were much less likely to get lung, bowel, mouth, digestive tract or breast tumors than people who rarely or never eat the popular fruit. A review of over 40 previous studies, by experts at the University of Perugia in Italy, found the biggest benefits were seen in cancer of the stomach and oesophagus, where some data suggested apples nearly halved tumour risk. Apple eaters […]

5 Healthy Foods for Your Brain

When reading Dr. Eric R. Braverman’s book, Younger (Thinner) You Diet, I was impressed by how much space he devotes to eating foods that promote brain health. I’ve known for years that eating the right antioxidant-rich, organic foods can keep your body young and healthy. But I didn’t realize how much our diet can affect our brains. Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for feeding the brain, which needs fat to produce neurotransmitters. This means ingredients such as: Salmon – Salmon is an excellent source of heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, which can also help improve cognition. Fresh produce – One study found that seniors who ate close to […]

So, How Old Are You?

As a doctor who’s actively involved in anti-aging medicine research and do-able anti-aging techniques for my patients, I’m always interested in helping my patients stay feeling, and living, as youthful as possible.  Did you know that your mental perception of your age can make a big difference in how young, or old, you really feel and behave? Let me share with you some interesting findings by psychologists about your real age versus how old you feel. Is Your Inner Age the Same as Your Outer Age? I’ve noticed in my own patients that those who were relatively healthy, financially and socially […]

Supplements You Need for Every Life Stage

We keep track of passing time by different means—presidential administrations, our children’s movement through grades, fashion eras, simple decades. Life has many eras of growth and health, and if you’re a doctor, like Colorado-based Integrative Practitioner, Robert Rountree, MD, you would focus on physiology: childhood, post-pubertal teens, young adults, middle-aged, elderly. “There are definite differences in nutritional needs that correspond to each of those phases,” says Rountree. And the good doctor is, of course, spot-on. As you age, your nutrition needs change. Here’s where to focus in each decade of life, and the supplements that can help. Ages 0–10: A […]

Vitamin E Could Help Protect From Pneumonia

An article that appeared on October 3, 2016 in Clinical Interventions in Aging reported a protective role for vitamin E against pneumonia in older men. For the current investigation, Dr Harri Hemilä of the University of Helsinki, Finland analyzed data from the Alpha-Tocopherol Beta-Carotene (ATBC) Cancer Prevention Study conducted in Finland between 1985-1993. The trial included 29,133 men between the ages of 50 to 69 years who smoked at least five cigarettes daily upon enrollment. Participants received alpha tocopherol (vitamin E), beta carotene, both supplements, or a placebo for five to eight years ending in April 1993. The current study was […]
