Zinc Deficiency Linked to Hypertension

An article appearing on January 16, 2019 in the American Journal of Physiology–Renal Physiology  reported that deficient zinc levels may contribute to high blood pressure by promoting sodium re-absorption by the kidneys. Zinc deficiency is common in many chronic diseases and can worsen hypertension. However, it had not been known whether zinc deficiency alone could impact blood pressure. In the current study, the researchers fed 20 mice diets that contained adequate amounts of zinc for two weeks, after which 15 animals were given zinc deficient diets for five to six weeks. Five of these deficient animals were subsequently returned to diets that provided […]

In This New Year, You Should Add a Little Zinc

Add a modest amount of zinc in your diet to reduce ‘wear and tear’ on DNA, suggests a study. The study has been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers from the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Research Institute (CHORI) show that a modest 4 milligrams of extra zinc a day in the diet can have a profound, positive impact on cellular health that helps fight infections and diseases. This amount of zinc is equivalent to what biofortified crops like zinc rice and zinc wheat can add to the diet of vulnerable, nutrient deficient populations. CHORI Senior Scientist Janet […]

Don’t Waste Time: Treat Your Arthritis Early

Arthritis is a condition which causes pain and inflammation of body joints. Dr Michael Mukasa, an orthopaedic surgeon at Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services in Uganda (CoRSU), says old age, genetic predisposition, accidents and trauma in the joints put you at risk of arthritis. Early treatment of arthritis prevents further damage of the joints. “Avoid forceful stretching of the joints because ligament structures around the joints get microscopic tearing which may later cause pain in the joints,” says Dr Mukasa. Regular health visits for borne density tests save you the costs involved in treating the disease in the late stage. Jamiru Mpiima, a nutritionist at Family […]

B12 Is More Critical Than We Thought

Remember when Pac-Man became super powerful after eating power pellets? That’s how vitamin B12 acts with microbes (without Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde), according to new research that suggests the vitamin is far more influential than previously thought. B12 is involved in the metabolism of every cell in the human body and has a key role in the functioning of the brain and nervous system and in the formation of blood. Scientists at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have found more evidence that B12 yields great power in the microbial world. Their findings, published in the Proceedings of […]
