Grace O’s Long Journey To FoodTrients

Long before the idea of FoodTrients was born, I ran a culinary school, owned restaurants and wrote a food column in Southeast Asia. So it made perfect sense that when I first moved to America 20-plus years ago, I would open a bakery. I love to bake, and cakes were my specialty. But the long hours and the need for far more support than I could afford then, caused me to close the bakery. It broke my heart at the time, but it was one of the best things that happened to me because it changed the course of my […]

Just don’t forage for dandelion greens if you live in an urban or suburban place—opt instead for pesticide-free organic varieties. How to Fill the Fiber Gap

Are you getting enough fiber? Even if you’re eating “healthy,” you may be a part of the population that falls into the “fiber gap” and falling short of the suggested intake, which can wreak havoc on your digestive and immune function. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends a daily fiber intake of 28 grams for men and 22 grams for women over 51 years old. However, the average American takes in only around 16 grams of fiber per day. Not everyone enjoys the foods that are rich in fiber. Luckily, there’s an endless array of fiber supplements on the […]

Where To Find Some of My Exotic Ingredients

By Grace O Because of FoodTrients, I have made it my mission to find herbs, fruits, vegetables and plants from all over the world that pack a lot of nutrition and age-defying benefits.  It’s been so rewarding to introduce some of the foods and ingredients I grew up with in Southeast Asia like moringa, yuka/cassava, jackfruit, ashitaba and others. It’s also been a great adventure for me to learn about new superfoods from around the world like baobab, reishi mushrooms, ashwagandha and more. I’m very fortunate to live in southern California where so much produce grows. It’s a melting pot […]

Eat Tasty Treats for a Healthy Halloween

Everyone loves Halloween. That’s probably because it’s the first holiday after the summer and signals a new holiday season with Thanksgiving and Christmas just ahead. I have friends with children who like to trick-or-treat in my neighborhood. It’s fun to have them over after they’ve collected their candy to check out their costumes. Usually the kids are hungry, and rather than letting them dine on candy I like to serve them treats that are delicious, but that they’d never suspect are healthy, too. Their parents sure appreciate that! The recipes below from my cookbook, The Age Beautifully Cookbook, deliver on […]
