Can You Really Extend Your Life?

While the Bible records a human life span of up to 969 years, the prospect of surviving for nearly a millennium (or more) is the stuff of science fiction in our times. A number of people claim to be older, but the oldest person on record is Jeanne Calment of France, who lived for 122 years. She established for humans what is known, in the field of gerontology, as maximum life span. That is, the maximum number of years a person could potentially live. This is not to be confused with life expectancy, which is the number of years one can expect […]

What You Should Eat To Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease affects over 13 million people worldwide. Many of my patients fear this most common form of dementia, and with good reason. The disease is not completely understood, and it is not possible to predict who will fall victim. With treatment costs for Alzheimer’s topping 100 billion dollars in the United States alone, the medical community is eager to unlock the mysteries of this disease. In my review of recent studies on Alzheimer’s, I found plenty of promising news. A handful of studies show that your eating habits in middle age can have an effect on your Alzheimer’s risk. […]

Blueberries Boost Longevity

Until recently, the majority of scientific research on blueberries has focused on the cognitive benefits of this fruit. Multiple studies have shown that blueberries slow age-related damage to brain cells and protect memory-associated brain regions from oxidant and inflammatory damage. The result is improvements in overall cognitive function. Researchers have uncovered new data showing that blueberries delay aging and promote longevity. In laboratory experiments, blueberries and their extracts have extended the life span in two different models of aging. Additionally, blueberries have been shown to fight DNA damage, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and even cancer. Rich in anthocyanins and pterostilbenes, […]

Tart Cherry Juice Could Help Improve Joint Symptoms

The November, 2014 issue of the Journal of Functional Foods published a report authored by researchers at England’s Northumbria University that revealed a benefit for tart cherry juice concentrate in reducing factors contributing to painful joints. In a single blinded, two-phase, randomized, cross-over designed study, Dr Glyn Howatson and his colleagues gave 30 milliliters or 60 milliliters Montmorency tart cherry juice to 12 healthy participants twice per day for two days. A washout period of ten days or more separated each phase of treatment. Blood and urine samples were collected before and after treatment. Reductions in serum C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker […]

Oily Fish and Blueberries Aid Memory

Scientists have for the first time discovered what effect multiple, rather than just single, foods with anti-inflammatory effects have on healthy individuals. The results of a diet study show that bad cholesterol was reduced by 33 per cent, blood lipids by 14 per cent, blood pressure by 8 per cent and a risk marker for blood clots by 26 per cent. A marker of inflammation in the body was also greatly reduced, while memory and cognitive function were improved. “The results have exceeded our expectations! I would like to claim that there has been no previous study with similar effects […]

The Little-Known Longevity Factor in the Japanese Diet

Over the past decade, a quiet revolution in aging research has unfolded, its focus centered on little-known molecules known as fucoidans. These molecules play a crucial role across a broad range of physiological mechanisms. Fucoidans are found almost exclusively in certain kinds of seaweed. Their anti-aging potential emerged in several analyses of the Japanese diet, particularly among inhabitants of the island of Okinawa, long known for its high concentration of people at least a century old (centenarians). Virtually no one in the West obtains enough of these critical molecules, which have been shown to facilitate tissue regeneration, immune function, and cell-to-cell communication. In this article, you will discover how fucoidans work to combat cancer, […]

Grapes, Red Wine Have Anti-Aging Properties

Grapes and the skin of this fruit is beneficial for health. Scientists have found that grapes, which is abundantly full of chemical known as resveratrol, has anti-aging properties. A team of scientists under Syed Ibrahim Rizvi of the biochemistry department of Allahabad University is engaged on evaluating these properties of resveratrol, a chemical also found in red wine. “Since time immemorial, humans have searched for the elixir of life and to realize the fact that same one has to grow old with time is always a difficult thought to digest. But scientists, in the last few decades, are focusing on nutritional supplements which may […]

African Plant Reveals Possible Treatment for Aging Brain

The Salk Institute for Biological Studies issued the following news release: For hundreds of years, healers in Sao Tome e Principe–an island off the western coast of Africa–have prescribed cata-manginga leaves and bark to their patients. These pickings from the Voacanga africana tree are said to decrease inflammation and ease the symptoms of mental disorders. Now, scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have discovered that the power of the plant isn’t just folklore: a compound isolated from Voacanga africana protects cells from altered molecular pathways linked to Alzheimer’s disease (http://www.salk.edu/ra/alzheimers_and_aging.html), Parkinson’s disease and the neurodegeneration that often follows a stroke. “What this provides us with […]

Why Aging Makes You Depressed, Fatigued, and Overweight

Serotonin is a compound in the brain that promotes feelings of personal security, relaxation, and confidence. A serotonin deficiency can result in sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, and a propensity to overeat, particularly carbohydrates like simple sugars. Startling research reveals that serotonin levels decline as we age! These findings provide a biochemical rationale to explain common age-related disorders such as depressed mood and sleep difficulties. Based on these discoveries, aging people may appreciably improve their health by restoring serotonin to youthful levels. The amino acid tryptophan is needed to produce serotonin in the brain. While the amount of tryptophan in a […]
