Apple Polyphenols and Longevity

In the last year alone, scientists from three different laboratories have published studies that demonstrate how polyphenol molecules derived from apples extend life span in various species by as much as 12%. These researchers are unraveling the various mechanisms of action that give apple polyphenols such promise as anti-aging nutrients. Initial findings show that apple polyphenols modulate multiple signaling molecules to delay the onset of age-related disorders. They may also mimic the actions of calorie restriction, a known antiaging technique. One polyphenol, phloridzin, which is heavily concentrated in the skin of the apple, also potently suppresses several processes leading to glycation, […]

Soda May Accelerate Aging

As if the health risks of soda weren’t already enough, a new study shows it may also be linked to accelerated aging. In a study, telomeres, the end caps of DNA strands that serve as a marker for aging, were found to be shortened in people who drink soda. The results were published in the American Journal for Public Health. Soda Aged Cells by About Five Years In previous studies, the length of telomeres has been associated with disease and mortality. Shortened telomeres are linked to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Researchers surveyed over 5,000 Americans between the ages of 20 to 65 years. They […]

Younger Skin in 2015: The Top 5 Things To Avoid

Calcium & Collagen: The Dynamic Duo That Prevents Bone Loss

It is always important to make sure my older patients are getting enough calcium and Vitamin D to protect against bone loss and osteoporosis.  Post-menopausal women are at highest risk for osteoporosis.  Recently, though, researchers out of Florida State University have added another nutrient which helps prevents bone loss even better.  Let me tell you about it and how you can add it to your bone loss prevention regimen… New Supplement Adds Collagen to Calcium to Fight Bone Loss Calcium and Vitamin D are well known for working together to prevent bone loss.  But, as good as they are, the […]

Excess Iron Could Accelerate Aging

Research conducted in roundworms, described in the November 2014 issue of the journal Aging, indicates that iron, beyond accumulating with aging, could actually contribute to the condition. Gordon Lithgow, PhD, of the Buck Institute and his associates studied the effects of iron in Caenorhabditis elegans, a nematode that has been the subject of numerous experiments in the field of gerontology. The research team discovered that the accumulation of calcium, copper, iron, and manganese increased with age, and that potassium and phosphorus levels tended to decline. Acting on the knowledge of iron’s role in neurodegenerative-associated protein aggregation, they investigated the effects of adding the […]

Halt Sugar-Induced Cell Aging

Diabetics have long been known to age faster than healthy individuals. The mechanism behind the accelerated destruction of cells, tissues, and organs observed in diabetics is called glycation, the dangerous binding of sugars to proteins.1 The resulting sugar-protein complex is known as an advanced glycation end product or AGE. In the laboratory, glycation’s effect on living tissues was found to be identical to the process by which meat is browned when cooked at high temperatures. Healthy proteins also turn brown in the presence of excess glucose and become functionally impaired. Scientists have confirmed that this destructive process may also occur in healthy individuals when blood glucose levels are sustained above 85 mg/dL, […]

High-doses of Vitamin D Prevents Bone Breaks In Elderly

High dose vitamin D supplements could reduce fractures in the elderly by more than 20%, UK researchers said. The brittlebone disease osteoporosis is common among the elderly, but scientists at the University of Cambridge in Englandhave shown that large doses of vitamin D, taken only every four months, can cut the risk of broken bones among 65 to 85 year olds. “Total fracture incidence was reduced by 22 percent and fractures in major osteroporotic sites by 33 percent,” Kay Tee Khaw, a professor of clinical gerontology, reports in the March 1st issue of the British Medical Journal. Fractures of the hip, wrist and spine are most closely linked […]

Arthritis Rare in Maori Culture – They Eat This Every Day!

Fall’s here and so is the colder, damper weather.  For my patients and readers with arthritis that means increased joint aches and pains.  It also often means the inability to stay as active as you’d like too.  That’s why I want to tell you about a tiny seafood that’s research proven to knock out arthritis pain.  It even helps rebuild joints. The Tiny Seafood Supplement with Huge Arthritis Benefits The native Maori Indian peoples have lived in coastline communities in New Zealand for centuries.  Not long ago medical researchers started to study them because of their almost non-existent levels of […]

Low Calorie Diet Slows Down Aging Process

A new research has found that having a diet low in calories can reduce the aging process. The study conducted by the researchers at the Neuroscientists at NYU Langone Medical Center on female mice, has shown that calorie-reduced diets stop the normal rise and fall in activity levels of close to 900 different genes linked to aging and memory formation in the brain. Senior study investigator Stephen D. Ginsberg, said that their study showed how calorie restriction practically arrests gene expression levels involved in the aging phenotype-how some genes determine the behavior of mice, people, and other mammals as they get old. Ginsberg […]

Grow Old or Grow Bold – Which Will You Choose?

The great playwright George Bernard Shaw once said, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing “.  As an Anti-Aging Medicine doctor, I couldn’t agree more.  For you to stay healthy as you get older, you have to both take care of  your  physical health as well as your social and emotional health. You can retire from a job but you should never retire from life. That’s why, in honor of “National Active Aging Week” this November, I’d like to share with you the many health and social benefits of Active Ageing.  I’ll also give […]
