This according to a nationwide observational study, published in The Lancet Public Health journal, of over one million adults diagnosed with dementia in France. This study looked specifically at the effect of alcohol use disorders, and included people who had been diagnosed with mental and behavioural disorders or chronic diseases that were attributable to chronic harmful use of alcohol. Of the 57,000 cases of early-onset dementia (before the age of 65), the majority (57%) were related to chronic heavy drinking. The World Health […]

Good Brain Health Equals A Young, Vibrant You!

When I discuss fitness with my patients, they’re often surprised when I tell them they need to also consider the fitness of their brain too. Many people don’t know that a healthy brain not only helps sharpen their memory but it also helps prevent other diseases as well. Today, I’d like to share with you some things I recommend to my patients to keep their brain fit. These include nutrition, little games you can fit into a few minutes of your day, and longer “exercises” that mix things up to give your brain a good workout.  First, let’s start with […]

Younger: How To Turn Back the Clock 10 Years

LOS ANGELES, Calif (December 4, 2017)–The body is magnificent but it doesn’t come with a lifetime warranty, or an operating manual. You’re the result of millions of years of evolution, but many of the adaptations that helped your ancestors survive are now working overtime to accelerate the aging process. The assumption here is that we are our genes and therefore trapped by the past. The good news is that your genetic code—the DNA sequence that is the biochemical basis of heredity—can play a minor role in the way you age. The scientific reality is that 90 percent of the signs […]

Caffeine May Help Kidney Disease Patients Live Longer

Caffeine consumption may prolong the lives in patients with chronic kidney disease, according to a study presented at ASN Kidney Week 2017. Coffee consumption has been linked to a longer life in the general population. To see if this holds true for individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD), Miguel Bigotte Vieira, MD, of Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte, in Portugal, and his colleagues examined the association of caffeine consumption with mortality among 2,328 patients with CKD in a prospective US cohort, using the continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999– 2010. The team found a dose-dependent inverse association between caffeine and all-cause mortality. […]

Healthy Heart, Long Life

A healthy heart is key to a long life. When I say this to my patients many of them protest that avoiding cancer or protecting your brain is just is important. While they have a point, I stand by my statement. The reason I feel so strongly about heart health is that I’ve seen time and time again that people who take good care of their hearts tend to avoid other deadly, chronic diseases like liver disease, many cancers, and Alzheimer’s. The steps you take to improve your heart health will have a great impact on your overall health. And […]

Most Elderly Hip Fractures Occur Indoors

The American Society of Anesthesiologists issued the following news release: Think the shorter winter days, ice and snow put your older loved one at greater risk for a fall and broken hip? Think again. A preliminary study presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY(R) 2017 annual meeting shows that the majority of falls occur during warm months, and a greater number of the falls happen indoors rather than out. “Falls are one of the most common health concerns facing the elderly today,” said Jason Guercio, M.D., M.B.A., study author, North American Partners in Anesthesiology at The Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain. “And this population is the fastest growing […]

Tips to Keep Eating Healthy at 50 And Beyond

A balanced diet is an integral element of a healthy lifestyle for men, women and children alike. According to the National Institute on Aging, simply counting calories without regard for the foods being consumed is not enough for men and women 50 and older to maintain their long-term health. Rather, the NIA emphasizes the importance of choosing low-calorie foods that have a lot of the nutrients the body needs. But counting calories can be an effective and simple way to maintain a healthy weight, provided those calories are coming from nutrient-rich foods. When choosing foods to eat, the NIA recommends eating […]

Trainers, Doctors Tout Need To Be Active While Aging

David Williams has always been an active guy. But when the 61-year-old could no longer hike on hunting trips without huffing and puffing and stopping to rest, Williams realized he had let his physical fitness slip away. “If I want to enjoy the things I really enjoy, I have to be in the physical condition to do so,” Williams said. “Otherwise, I can watch, but I can’t participate.” If Williams wanted to enjoy hunting or alpine skiing, if he wanted to be able to keep up with his active, teenage godchildren, he had to make his physical fitness more of a […]
