                      Protect Yourself from Unhealthy Chemicals

                      Published by Amy Sawelson Landes

In his devastating expose, The Hundred-Year Lie: How to Protect Yourself from the Chemicals That Are Destroying Your Health, investigative journalist Randall Fitzgerald warns how thousands of man-made chemicals in our food, water medicine, and environment are making humans the most polluted species on the planet.

The Hundred-Year Lie began in 1906, when the U.S. Congress enacted the Pure Food and Drug Act, a law that gave Americans the illusion of food and drug safety. Germs were identified as Public Enemy Number One, and synthetic chemicals in food and medicine were hailed as the cure for this germ threat. “Better Things for Better Living…Through Chemistry” was deemed the official motto of the times. A synthetic belief system emerged into our country that transformed our lives.  Our quality of food deteriorated as our health was greatly impacted.

Pharmaceutical drugs are prescribed to mask our symptoms in the hope that, with time, our immune systems will do the actual healing. But our immune systems are being compromised by inadequate nutrition, overuse of antibiotics, and the chemical toxins our bodies absorb and store.

It turns out, nature is our best pharmacy. The Mediterranean diet has become increasingly popular among people who want to rid their bodies of toxins found in processed foods and pharmaceuticals. The Mediterranean diet traditionally includes fruits, vegetables, grains and smaller amounts of meat and fish. Medical science tells us that heart patients who go on this diet reduce their risk of future heart attack and other cardiac death by up to 70%. By contrast, cholesterol-lowering drugs cost U.S.heart patients nearly $14 billion a year but lower their risk of recurrent heart problems by only 35%.

Other practical steps you can take include:

                      • Study the Labels—On every product with an ingredient label, whether it be food, medicine, or household items, familiarize yourself with the chemical names by comparing them to a list of toxins you have compiled based on information at the Environmental Working Group website — www.ewg.org
                      • Drink Wheatgrass Juice—To help strengthen your immune system and cleanse your body of chemical toxins, drink wheatgrass juice every day.
                      • Detox with Saunas—When combined with vigorous exercise, saunas can aid your body in squeezing out in sweat the more deeply embedded chemical toxins.
                      • Eat Organic Foods—Whenever and wherever you can, purchase organic foods and eat at organic food restaurants. The pesticide residues on these foods will be much lower than non-organics, and you should find many fewer synthetic chemicals of all kinds contaminating organic brands.

Until dramatic changes are made in the way we grow, process and package products inAmerica, the burden of eating healthier, safer food is on each of us. Merely by choosing a diet of pure foods and a lifestyle free of synthetics, we can detoxify ourselves and initiate the healing of many degenerative illnesses and diseases.
