New Research Offers Hope For Dementia Sufferers

Researchers may have found a way to slow down or prevent memory problems that arise in old age and which can become devastating in patients with dementia. The fresh hope comes from a series of studies in humans and mice that identified a protein which causes memory impairment when it builds up in the blood and brain with age. Scientists found that injections of the protein made young animals’ memories worse and reduced the growth of new neurons in their brains. Further studies showed that blocking the protein prevented memory loss in older animals, making them smarter than untreated animals […]

Will Drinking Champagne Prevent Dementia?

Three glasses of champagne a day can prevent dementia, claimed news stories last week. Enough to make anyone crack open the Cristal. The reports were based on a study from the University of Reading that was carried out three years ago but resurfaced last week via social media. The researchers found that drinking champagne improved spatial memory – the ability to navigate to wherever you want to go (for example, getting home after the pub). Champagne contains chardonnay mixed with pinot noir and pinot meunier, two black grapes that contain phenolic acids, which are thought to reduce inflammation and may […]

Switching To A Healthier Diet May Ward Off Dementia

Managing one’s lifestyle factors including smoking, hypertension and depression could prevent one-third of the world’s dementia cases, a study said. The findings showed that better management of nine risk factors in early, mid and late life could reduce the increased likelihood of developing dementia in about 35 percent cases, health news reported. ‘The potential magnitude of the effect on dementia of reducing these risk factors is larger than we could ever imagine the effect that current, experimental medications could have,’ said Lon Schneider, Professor at the University of Southern California. ‘Mitigating risk factors provides us a powerful way to reduce the global […]

MIND Diet Could Help Prevent Dementia

Dementia is one of the most dangerous and distressing conditions anyone can face in their lives. It is a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes, caused by brain disease or injury, and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning. Alcohol Use Biggest Risk Factor For Dementia

Alcohol use disorders are the most important preventable risk factors for the onset of all types of dementia, especially early-onset dementia. This according to a nationwide observational study, published in The Lancet Public Health journal, of over one million adults diagnosed with dementia in France. This study looked specifically at the effect of alcohol use disorders, and included people who had been diagnosed with mental and behavioural disorders or chronic diseases that were attributable to chronic harmful use of alcohol. Of the 57,000 cases of early-onset dementia (before the age of 65), the majority (57%) were related to chronic heavy drinking. The World Health […]

Watch your weight Among the biggest risk factors for dementia are diabetes and mid-life obesity, which can double your chances of dementia at a later age. Links have also been found between elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and the risk of dementia, although these are not conclusive. Monitoring your weight and cardiovascular health in middle age could greatly reduce your likelihood of dementia. Don’t smoke The brain may be affected by the long-term consequences of heavy smoking. Scientists have found smoking to increase the risk of cognitive decline in old age, with one study showing that middle-aged people who smoked more […]

Do You Have Trouble Swallowing?

Sometimes I’ll see patients with the complaint that they’re having trouble swallowing, or a sensation that food is getting stuck in their throat and doesn’t go down easily.  The medical term for this is a hard word to pronounce –dysphagia (dis-faj-ah) – and could stem from a number of causes.  If you experience difficult swallowing, here’s what you should know about it. Dysphagia – What Trouble Swallowing Could Mean   Trouble swallowing – dysphagia – rarely occurs on its own.  It usually accompanies some other condition of which it is a symptom.  It most frequently occurs in older people, and those with […]

Diabetes, Celiac Disease and Tinnitus – The Vitamin B12 Link

Research has shown that tinnitus can be caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency.  B12 deficiency is also a common complication in diabetes and celiac disease as they both share the inability to absorb B12 properly.  People who have celiac disease and type II diabetes also have higher rates of nerve-damage related conditions like tinnitus.  In addition, the older you get, the more at risk you may be for developing both a B12 deficiency and tinnitus.  Why? As you get older, you lose a great deal of your ability to absorb B12 from your food through your intestine. Recent research has […]
