Most of Us Will Age Normally

Memory declines as we age, but most people will never experience the severe neuronal loss of dementia. “The Aging, Demographics and Memory Study” on the prevalence of dementia concluded that 13.9 percent of the U.S. population over the age of 71 has some form of dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease accounting for just less than 10 percent, says brain researcher Carol Barnes. “That means 86 percent of us age normally.” The likelihood of dementia increase as people age, hitting 1 in 3 by age 85. Barnes, director of the University of Arizona’s Mc-Knight Brain Institute, has studied the aging brain for […]

Rapamycin May Slow Aging In Human Skin

The “Fountain of Youth” may not be flowing with water, but instead a drug designed for an entirely different purpose, research suggests. A study published in the journal Geroscience has found that rapamycin, a drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the prevention of organ rejection following transplant surgery, may also slow aging in human skin. When applied to human skin, the drug appears to help reduce wrinkles and sagging and improve skin tone, researchers report after a small study. “As researchers continue to seek out… ways to live longer, we’re seeing growing potential for use of this drug,” […]

Scientists Pinpoint Brain’s Role In Human Longevity

The brain’s neural activity–long implicated in disorders ranging from dementia to epilepsy–also plays a role in human aging and life span, according to research led by scientists in the Blavatnik Institute at Harvard Medical School. The study, published Oct. 16 in Nature, is based on findings from human brains, mice and worms and suggests that excessive activity in the brain is linked to shorter life spans, while suppressing such overactivity extends life. The findings offer the first evidence that the activity of the nervous system affects human longevity. Although previous studies had suggested that parts of the nervous system influence aging in animals, the role […]

Can Ear Tickling Slow the Aging Process?

Fancy an ear tickle? Stimulating the ear with low electrical currents appears to potentially slow down the effects of aging, according to new research. The new research, conducted at the University of Leeds, found that a short daily therapy delivered for two weeks led to improvements in quality of life, mood and sleep. The therapy, called transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation, delivers a painless electrical current to the ear, which sends signals to the body’s nervous system through the vagus nerve, which is connected to the heart, lungs and digestive system. This could potentially be used to help prevent chronic diseases that become […]

Keep Your Skin Healthy Using Natural Oils

It’s getting colder in many parts of North America now and many people may start to be bothered by “winter itch”, that dry , flaky, reddened skin condition that may occur when heated homes become dry.  Even if you live in a warmer climate, you could be like some of my patients who experience oilier, break-out prone skin, especially if you perspire more often. Whichever your skin condition is, you don’t have to put up with the flaky itchiness or embarrassing break outs.  I’d like to share with you what I tell my own patients about making the most of […]

Wisdom @ Work: What Elders Bring to the Table

No matter how much technology changes the way that we work, companies will always be in the market for wisdom. And what’s the best way to get the knowledge and insight they need? By hiring a “modern elder.” That’s the argument Chip Conley, an entrepreneur and strategic adviser for Airbnb, makes in his new book, Wisdom @ Work: The Making of a Modern Elder. As the former head of one of the world’s largest boutique hotel chains, Conley experienced culture shock when — at age 52 — he was hired to help shape Airbnb’s global hospitality strategy. It was his […]

Losing your memory? Then you may want to make a simple, healthy adjustment to your diet: add more leafy greens. Why? Because a recent study found that eating leafy greens may help to preserve your cognitive abilities into old age. The results were published in the journal FASEB. Eating Leafy Greens Daily Slows Mental Aging By 11 Years In a recent study, participants examined the nutrition intake of 954 older individuals (average age 81) and followed them for an average period of almost five years. Previous research has shown that a plant-based Mediterranean-style diet may help to prevent dementia and […]

To Live Longer, Science Says Limit This

Would you stay on a calorie/carbohydrate-controlled diet if I told you it would add decades of youthful living to your life? Not only would you live longer, but you’d live in good health without the typical diseases and conditions of aging. Or would you say, to heck with it, I don’t care if I live to 100, I want to have my cake and eat it too? I bet if I took a survey of my patients and my readers, most of them would opt for the latter.  They’d want to eat their cake and enjoy it for as long […]
